Kinderdijk

The Netherlands is famous for its windmills, tulip fields, Amsterdam, and canals. Kinderdijk is the place to go if you want to see windmills in action against a lush green backdrop with bodies of water.

Considered one of the most scenic villages in the Netherlands, Kinderdijk is near the city of Rotterdam. The town still has 19 windmills built between 1739 and 1740. They look beautiful, but these windmills do more than that. 

Built to prevent floods, they have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1997, keeping the village and nearby areas safe. Two of them are open to the public, and a visitor center in the area can tell you more about how water is managed.
