Whether you’re hitting the beach, exploring cultural landmarks, or partying all night, packing essentials ensures a smooth and enjoyable trip. Here’s everything you need to bring to Mexico to make the most of your vacation.

Backpack or a suitcase: Deciding between a backpack and a suitcase comes down to personal preference. I personally rely on my Osprey Farpoint backpack for every trip because I find it more convenient and comfortable. Check their official website or find it on Amazon.

However, if you’re more into suitcases, consider this Samsonite option available in various sizes and sets or another great choice that also offers multiple size options.

Packing cubes: Available in various sizes and designs, some even include laundry bags for added convenience. They’re perfect for organizing different types of clothing, especially items that wrinkle easily. Smaller cubes work well for keeping socks and underwear neatly packed. Lightweight clothing: Mexico’s warm spring weather calls for breathable fabrics. Pack lightweight tops, shorts, flowy skirts, and sundresses to stay cool during the day.

Swimwear: No matter your Mexico destination, a swimsuit is a must. Bring multiple options if you plan on spending a lot of time in the water. Pack wet bags to carry a wet swimsuit and towels.

Rainjacket or umbrella: While spring is generally dry, occasional showers can happen in some regions. A light, compact rain jacket or umbrella won’t take up much space in your bag.

Bug Spray: Mosquitoes can be a nuisance in some areas. Throw in a small bottle of bug spray.

First Aid Kit: It’s always better to be prepared, so have a small pack of the essentials for even minor injuries or scratches.

Mexico City

Mexico City’s spring-like climate makes it a wonderful place to visit year-round, but it’s especially lovely in March and April when the chance of rain is low, and temperatures average their highest in the low 80°Fs (26°Cs).

Traveling to Mexico City during spring break also gives you a chance to see special events during the Easter holiday, especially in the neighborhood of Coyoacan or at the famous Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe church, where many make the pilgrimage from all across the country.

The Mexican league football (soccer) season is also in full swing during the spring months. With three professional teams in this capital city, it’s an activity you shouldn’t miss to experience Mexican culture.

Tulum cenotes

Tulum’s cenotes, natural sinkholes filled with clear freshwater, are among the best destinations for Mexico spring break for families and couples. The cenotes, formed when limestone collapses to reveal the underground rivers beneath, are absolutely safe to swim in, and the year-round water temperature of Tulum cenotes is around 75°F (23°C), which is perfect for a splash in spring!  

Many of these cenotes are located throughout the jungle in Tulum. Expect pools surrounded by nature and underground caves, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and even diving. They are easily accessible from the city of Tulum by car or bike. 

Famous Tulum cenotes include the Gran Cenote and Dos Ojos, which are both family-friendly and have shallow waters and tropical fish. Suytun’s cenote is aimed at young couples, and the platform will give you Instagram-perfect pictures!

Mérida is the capital and largest city in the Yucatán Peninsula and one of the popular places to visit in Mexico. The city is known for its Mayan history, colonial architecture, and absolutely delicious local cuisine—the food in Merida is out of this world!

Although it is a smaller city in Mexico, it still has a great international airport with direct flights from five US cities each day. Another great reason to choose Merida as your spring break destination in Mexico is that the city is regarded as not only the safest city in the country but also one of the safest in all of North America! But things can, of course, happen anywhere, so always be cautious!

Merida is a super vibrant city with many things to do, such as swimming in the cenotes and visiting the Mayan ruins near Chichén Itzá and Uxmal. Inside the city, you’ll want to explore Plaza Grande and Paseo de Montejo and shop at the local markets for unique food! Take a free walking tour of the city to learn all that you can about its fascinating history.

As for food, make sure to try the local Yucatan dishes like cochinita pibil, papadzul, huevos, motuleños, Marquesitas and poc chuc. Akumal

Akumal is one of the great places to go in Mexico for families because it is quieter than the main tourist spots and convenient to several international airports. 

The city is 94 km (75-minute drive) from Cancun International Airport and 68 km (71-minute drive) from Tulum International Airport. It is also convenient to fly into Cozumel, but it is a longer drive because you need to take a ferry.

Besides spending your spring break vacation at your beachfront hotel, swimming, or snorkeling, you can also visit Akumal’s attractions.

It is home to the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary, which you should book in advance. There are several animal encounters with macaws, snakes, and a squirrel monkey. You must empty everything out from your pockets and remove jewelry before seeing the squirrel monkey. The sanctuary also has cenotes and ATV tours.

Tulum is a 20-minute drive from Akumal, where you can visit historic Mayan ruins. In addition to the parking fee, you will need to pay an entrance and a Tulum National Park fees. There are beaches near the ruins where you can spend the day.

Remember that these ruins can get busy because they are popular places to travel in Mexico, from Cancun and Cozumel and a stopover for cruise tours.

There is not much shade when walking through the ruins and to the entrance from the parking lot, so make sure you bring sun protection.

Tourists flock here year-round to explore the UNESCO World Heritage-listed city center, get lost in the colorful callejones (alleyways), marvel at the 17th-century Basilica of Guanajuato, and take in the postcard-perfect valley views from the vantage point of the Monumento El Pípila.

In Holbox, you’ll hang out at the ocean-side bars and lounge on the beach.  But there are also some surprising things to do as the island is known for its diverse wildlife: you can see flamingos, pelicans, and sea turtles.

Another unique feature of the island is its bioluminescent phytoplanktons. Go to the ocean on a dark night, and you’ll be treated to thousands of glowing specs just below the surface!

To get to Holbox Island, you must first go to Chiquila. If you are flying into the Cancun airport, you can take a two-hour shared bus or van to Chiquila. From there, take a 20-minute ferry to Holbox. Tepoztlán

While most people think of going to Mexico for the beaches, the country is also a world-class hiking destination, and the clear skies in March are perfect for hiking. One of the top places to hike is the valley of Tepoztlán, an easy 90-minute bus ride south of Mexico City from the Taxqueña bus station.

Of all the renowned Pueblos Mágicos (Magic Towns), Tepoztlán may be the most magical. If you have a week for spring break, you can easily spend a couple of days exploring Mexico City and then take a bus south to do several incredible hikes in Tepoztlán and the surrounding volcanoes.

There are at least 5-10 excellent hiking trails in Tepoztlán. Just north of the town’s square, you will find the most popular hike in El Tepozteco National Park, where you can climb to an ancient Aztec pyramid on a mountain overlooking the town. 

If you’re in good shape, you can continue to the top of El Tepozteco mountain for one of the best views in the area. To the south of town, Cerro Chalchitepetl and Cerro Cematzin are great hikes to sit at the top and watch the sunset.

If you’re looking to add some considerable summits to your hiking bucket list, to the west of Tepoztlán, you have Nevado De Toluca National Park, where you can hike a 4,680 m (15,354 ft) stratovolcano on a day trip, which is the fourth highest of Mexico’s peaks. In the crater of the extinct volcano is a series of picturesque lagoons.

If you want more of a challenge, you can hike Mexico’s third-highest peak, Iztaccíhuatl, to the east and get amazing views of Mexico’s highest peaks, Pico de Orizaba and Popocatépetl, which are both active volcanoes. For a more relaxed hike with great scenic views, there are many accessible lookout hikes in Iztaccíhuatl Popocatépetl National Park.

Cozumel

Cozumel is a fantastic destination for both adults and families. It’s an island off the Riviera Maya coast of Quintana Roo. The area is especially great for those who like to explore underwater, as it boasts fantastic reefs for snorkeling and diving.

You can take a 45-minute ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel. The most significant international airport is Cancun, which is nearby. Many travelers will pair a trip to Cozumel with Playa del Carmen, and some even visit Cozumel for a day trip.

Alternatively, check for a direct flight to Cozumel Airport, much smaller than Cancun Airport. Cozumel is also a popular port for cruise itineraries, like Virgin Voyages Riviera Maya.

Beach Clubs, like Mr. Sanchos and Paradise Island, cater to families and adults, as they have a kids’ play area off the beach and an adults-only pool. Mr. Sancho’s tends to be a party vibe, with the drinking age set at 18+. You can head to Nachi Cocum Beach Club for a more sophisticated vibe.

On most beaches, you can relax by snorkeling and participating in water sports like kayaking, jet skiing, and others.

Cozumel is an approachable destination for visitors. Everyone who works in tourism speaks English well and is happy to let you practice your Spanish with them.

There are also taxi stands at major ports and attractions with published rates; however, ensure the drivers charge you the correct rate. In addition, if you come over by ferry or take a boat tour, bring seasickness medication. The crossing is often choppy.

Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido is a beach town on the Pacific Ocean. If you need some beach time and sun, this is the place to go. The vibe is very relaxed and ideal for a spring break getaway.  

Puerto Escondido has multiple beaches. Playa Zicatela is a 3,5 km long sand beach perfect for surfing. At the south side of the beach are rocks where a small path leads to a bay.

Playa Carrizalillo is a smaller beach closer to downtown and can get packed during the day. Right above the beach is a small path that leads to a fantastic viewpoint. But for magnificent sunset views, you need to check out the Mirador Las Tortugas!

Playa Coral is ideal for a beach day. The water gets deep right away, and the waves can be high, but it has shade when you need to get away from the sun.

When you are in Puerto Escondido, make sure you get some fresh tortillas from the eateries around the market, which have plenty of spots serving them. For fun adventures, multiple boat tours let you discover the ocean and its wildlife. You can even take part in a turtle release.

The town also offers a variety of nighttime activities. You can head to Zicatela or Brisas de Zicatela for bars and clubs. If you want a calm night out, a movie is shown on the beach at the Hotel Villasol’s Club every Wednesday.
