Best of Art Nouveau Tbilisi Walking Tour

  • Duration: about 3 hours
  • Price: 45 EUR pp

I’ll show you the best Art Nouveau wonders and secrets of late 19th—and 20th-century Tbilisi, exploring the historic Mtatsminda neighborhood in depth. I’ll share enchanting urban stories and legends not found in any guidebook.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Tbilisi began to expand beyond its ancient city walls, ushering in a new era of cultural and architectural growth.

As part of the Russian Empire at the time, Georgia experienced significant cultural advancements, many of which are beautifully reflected in the Art Nouveau architecture of the Mtatsminda, Sololaki, and Chughureti neighborhoods.

These areas showcase some of the most stunning examples of Tbilisi’s architectural heritage, though many of these jewels urgently need renovation.

The impressive buildings we’ll explore on the tour were once the residences of wealthy merchants and bourgeoisie members.

The tour starts at Rustaveli Metro and goes through the Mtatsminda neighborhood, which now technically includes Sololaki (once a separate district) and covers some of the iconic buildings of Sololaki as well. It ends a 5-minute walk from Freedom/Liberty Square.

What we’ll see on the Art Nouveau Tbilisi Tour:

  • The so-called “Turquoise Lace House” is a stunning example of Georgian architecture that Joseph Stalin allegedly saved from demolition.
  • Breathtaking mirror mosaic halls of the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts.
    • Please note: it is a museum open from Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays or when they have special events/exhibitions. Therefore, a visit is subject to change, and the tour does not include an entrance ticket. The price is 12 GEL per person paid at the cashier.
  • The famous Bozarjiantsi house was recognized as one of the best residential buildings in 1915.
  • The former residence of the Iranian Consul done in very Persian style.
  • Magnificent hand-painted hallways of Sololaki
  • And many more…

As we explore the hidden Tbilisi, I’m eager to answer any questions you may have and share local insights into the city’s daily life, culture, and social lives.

This Art Nouveau walking tour in Tbilisi offers a deep dive into the city’s rich and often neglected history. I guarantee it will be a day filled with excitement, discovery, and memorable stories that truly capture the essence of Tbilisi’s cultural heritage.

  • A fabulous introduction to our stay in Georgia! She is a great communicator and concentrated on the architecture, building up stories of life then, the communist era, and life as it is now.
