Finding the right place for your next trip always requires accurate research and a good amount of time to read reviews and descriptions. Budapest is a vibrant city with cool, hip, and vibrant neighborhoods. Obviously, accommodation here, varies depending on your budget, needs, and the location. So interested in where to stay in Budapest? Alright the, let’s get into it.

Disclaimer: I haven’t stayed in all of those lodgings, but the post is based on thorough research and reviews of those accommodations. The hotels, hostels, and apartments mentioned here are not sponsored, I have selected them based on my preference, budget, design, and reviews.  

Where to Stay in Budapest – a story of two cities

Before you book accommodation, you need to understand the general layout of the city. What today is Budapest, it used to be two separate cities back in the day – Buda and Pest. It was on in 1873 when these two cities merged and created the current capital of Hungary.

The city is divided into Buda and Pest sides. Both of them are different from each other. For instance, Buda is laidback, calm and green, while Pest is energetic, vibrant, and dynamic that keeps things here very interesting.

The Castle District (District I)

Located at the Buda site of the city, The Castle District is home to Buda Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion, St. Matthias Church, Rudas Baths, and Gellert Hill. This beautiful and historical area is the best neighborhood to stay in Budapest for families, or anyone who likes being in quiet area and still being close to the center.

Belvaros (District V) – best place to stay in Budapest for tourists

This neighborhood is in Pest side and goes along the bank of Danube. Home to the iconic Parliament Building, District V features other gorgeous and historical sites like St. Stephen’s Basilica, Chain Bridge, Shoes on Danube, and Great Market Hall to name a few. The area is one of the most beautiful ones of the city, making it a great fit for any kind of traveler.

Terezvaros (District VI)

The main highlight of this district in Pest is Andrassy ut, a tree-lined boulevard featuring huge buildings and stunning State Opera House. Compared to District V, this one has a youthful character full of interesting venues and cool places to stay in Budapest.

Erzsebetvaros (District VII) – best area to stay in Budapest for nightlife

Among Budapest neighborhoods in Pest side, this one used to be a Jewish ghetto. Even today, you can stumbleupon beautiful synagogues and Kosher delis. District VII is ideal for party goers, as it’s one of the best nightlife hubs of the city. Famous ruin bars are all here, so you can easily do a pub crawl. Shortly, this neighborhood is for those who desire to be in the epicenter of action, students, and youngsters.

Szimpla Kert

Jozsefvaros (District VIII)

This one is one of the biggest districts of Budapest and consists of inner District VIII and outer District VIII. The last one is a bit run down and rugged, while inner part of the area is where to stay in Budapest. Also known as Palace District, it is home to several historical landmarks, museums, parks and of course, palaces.

Ferencvaros (District IX) – one of the cool places to stay in Budapest

This neighborhood is another cool place to stay in Budapest due to its recent nickname – the craft beer district. It’s home to some of the hip and trendy cafes and eateries. Moreover, it’s less touristy. Being a bit far away from overcrowded places, District IX is a great choice for those who are looking for experiencing Budapest outside the main sites and enjoying the vibe of a local lifestyle.

However, don’t assume that the district is all about that. National Theater, Whale Building & Terrace, Holocaust Museum and Great Market Hall are all located here or nearby.

If you need to use public transport, an underground metro and tram stops are within 2 minutes walk, while the Nyugati Railway Station is only 7 minutes away. You can also reach Buda Castle by foot, located only 2 km away from the castle, or walk along the Danube river (1.5 km away).

Marco Polo Top Hostel

One of the good options to stay in Budapest is Marco Polo Top Hostel, located 350 meters away from Blaja Lujza ter metro stop. The hostel has shared and private facilities and a terrace. You can rent a bicycle if you’d like to cycle around the city.

The major Budapest attractions like National Museum, Budapest Great Synagogue, Jewish Quarter or Central Market Hall are within a walking distance to name a few.

Maverick City Lodge

This is another 5-star boutique hostel in Budapest, just a few minutes from Budapest Great Synagogue, ruin bars, Danube riverside, and St. Stephen’s Basilica to name a few. Similar to Marco Polo Top Hostel, you can rent a bicycle right in the venue and explore the town. All rooms are air-conditioned, so you can easily escape hot weather.

Private rooms of the hostel feature flat-screen cable TV. Bathrooms are either shared or enjoyed privately depending on which room you book.

The venue also has a big common area to spend time leisurely and meet other guests, while well-equipped kitchen enables you to cook something for yourself any time of the day. There’s free coffee and tea for every guest.
