18 Things to Do in Racha | Your Racha-Lechkhumi Travel Guide

Pristine lakes, mountain peaks, mineral springs, and hiking opportunities make Racha a mountain paradise. However, unlike Kazbegi and Svaneti, Racha is less touristy to escape the crowds and have a calm holiday full of natural landscapes anywhere you look. This guide to all the best things to do in Racha provides detailed information on what to see, transportation options, hotels, and where to eat.

Nestled in the Greater Caucasus mountain range in the northeastern junction of Western Georgia, the official administrative name of Racha is Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti. Located between Svaneti and breakaway South Ossetia, visiting Racha is absolutely safe.

18 Things to Do in Racha | Your Racha-Lechkhumi Travel Guide  1

Racha is a popular summer holiday destination among Georgians to escape the summer heat, cool down, get a suntan at its rivers, eat comfort food, and drink great wine.

International travelers often skip Racha because of these reasons:

  1. Many want to gem-pack their itineraries with Georgia’s most popular and beautiful places.
  2. Getting to the region and around it is slightly tricky.
  3. The tourism infrastructure is under development, unlike other mountain areas of the country.

Despite that, if you are into less-known and unique places to visit in Georgia, Racha should be on your list. This post provides all the detailed information you need to know when planning to visit Racha.

But before we get into that, I need to explain more about the region, so you need a better understanding.

Racha as a whole region consists of three parts: Upper Racha, Lower Racha, and the Mountain Racha. The Rioni River (the largest river in Georgia) at the village of Tsesi is the natural border between Upper and Lower Racha. The city of Ambrolauri is the center, which makes a great base to explore Racha-Lechkhumi.

Former spa resort town Shovi, together with the small town of Oni and the mountain villages of Ghebi and Gona, comprise the Mountain Racha area.

Lechkumi, nestled in the west, covers the area from Tsageri to Lentekhi, the Lower Svaneti. This part of the Racha-Lechkhumi region offers an entirely different landscape than the eastern area, characterized by limestone pillars, emerald-green water reservoirs, and isolated villages high up in the hills.

Best time to visit Racha

Racha-Lechkhumi region has a high elevation, where the average height above sea level reaches 3800 meters in the Mountain Racha. Therefore, it’s an ideal place to escape high summer temperatures in various lowland cities of Georgia.

Summer is a go-to season and the best time to visit Racha, especially if you plan on hiking the Udziro Lake hike (more on this below). If you are into music and cultural festivals, Rokva Music Festival is held in Shovi every year at the end of July.

I haven’t been there in autumn, but my friends say it’s one of the best times to visit Racha to admire the beauty of fall foliage on densely forested slopes. Nature starts to change its color from the first week of September, but the end of September or the beginning of October should be the best times.

Winters here are cold and snowy, making high villages inaccessible during these months.

18 Things to Do in Racha | Your Racha-Lechkhumi Travel Guide  2

During spring and summer, Racha sometimes has heavy rains bringing landslides and washing away parts of the roads. When this happens, the government fixes the road conditions quickly, but remote villages could be cut off for several weeks. Therefore, I advise you to ask your host about weather conditions or monitor the news before setting off exploring remote areas.

How to get to Racha

Visiting Racha can be slightly tricky, but it’s not impossible. The best way to get to Racha is to drive a car. However, if you are uncomfortable driving here, there are several ways to get to Racha using public transportation.

Rent a car

Roads and highways to Racha and around it are almost traffic-free, so I highly recommend renting a car and driving there. Public transportation is scarce between the cities, making it slightly hard to get around. Moreover, several places to see in Racha I highlight in this post are only accessible by car

The roads are in good condition, and only small portions might be unpaved. Depending on where you want to go, Sedan-type cars are okay for the highways and between the cities. If you want to go slightly off-road or visit higher mountains, I recommend 4WD or SUV vehicles. We drove by Suzuki SX4 crossover, and it was fine, but in some areas where it was rocky off-road, we had to drive slowly.

If you plan on renting a car, I recommend using Local Rent for its lower prices, vehicles in good condition, and comprehensive travel insurance included in many cars without needing a deposit.

Tbilisi to Racha by car

If you are starting your journey from Tbilisi, the best way to get to Racha is via a relatively new Sachkhere/Oni road bypassing the Rikoti Pass. The road is fantastic, almost free of traffic, and offers beautiful natural landscapes. The drive takes around 3:30 – 4 hours.

Tip: on the highway, there’s a place called Grandma’s Khachapuri that serves a delicious Khachapuri with lots of cheese. Owned by an elderly couple, the venue only has Khachapuri and drinks, with no service staff. They open after 10 am as the couple takes a marshrutka ride from the nearby village at 9:50 am and stays open until 7-8 pm.

18 Things to Do in Racha | Your Racha-Lechkhumi Travel Guide  3

Kutaisi to Racha by car

In case you are already in western Georgia, either in Imereti, Samegrelo, or Guria, the best way to get to Racha is to drive from Kutaisi to Racha via Tkibuli and pass along the Shaori Lake. This route takes around 3 hours.

There is another alternative road if you also want to add Chiatura to your itinerary. In that case, drive from Kutaisi to Racha through Zestaponi-Chuatura-Sachkhere, which prolongs your drive by one hour.

Tbilisi to Oni by marshrutka

The new road of Sachkhere-Oni opened in 2021, cuts Racha Tbilisi travel time, even when using public transportation like marshrutkas (minibusses).

Daily marshrutkas and vans drive once or twice a day from Tbilisi to Oni from Okriba Bus Station near Didube Metro. The schedule varies by season; typically, there is a morning van departing around 8-8:30 am and/or an afternoon one at about 2-3 pm.

Call +995 599 12 09 29 to reserve the seat and double-check the schedule. Alternatively, arrive at Okriba 30-40 minutes earlier.

The price is 30 GEL for both a marshrutka and a van, paid directly to the driver. They drive through a new Sachkhere-Oni road and do not stop in Ambrolauri.

Fly from Tbilisi

Ambrolauri has a small airport that serves direct domestic flights from Tbilisi by a local airline company VanillaSky. I didn’t include it as the first option to get to Racha because the schedules are scarce, and they are not announced far ahead.

The departure airport is in Natakhtari, north of Tbilisi, taking around 40 minutes drive from the capital. The transfer to Natakhtari from Tbilisi is free of charge.

The flights from Tbilisi to Ambrolauri are seasonal, starting from late May and running until early autumn, depending on weather conditions.

The ticket costs 50 GEL one way. You can check the timetable and book tickets here. Alternatively, you can monitor the United Airports of Georgia Facebook page for updates on these flights.

Get a private transfer

Those who don’t like any of the options I have listed above, you can get a private transfer via Gotrip to any city of Racha from pretty much anywhere in Georgia, especially from Tbilisi, Kutaisi, or Batumi.

Where to stay in Racha

When considering where to stay in Racha, remember that the region is now developing tourist infrastructure, and currently, there’s a boom of A-frame cabins, luxurious hotels, and glamping spots.

The cities don’t offer many accommodation options; therefore, the best places to stay in Racha are nearby Ambrolauri, Oni, and Shovi. That’s why it’s better to visit Racha by car

Also, if you plan on traveling around the region and not only relaxing in one of the cute cabins, I advise basing yourself in Ambrolauri for most of your Racha trip.

Racha hotels in Oni-Shovi area

Family Hotel Gallery (Oni) – featuring handmade interior decor items made by the owners, it is one of the most popular places to stay in Racha and is almost always full. It offers a mixture of rustic-style and traditional Georgian interior. Some rooms come with private bathrooms. Contact them on Facebook.

Manino Utsera (Utsera) – this luxurious hotel in Utsera features a restaurant, an indoor swimming pool, and a garden in modern design. Manino Utsera is offering accommodation in Utsera.

Haeri Utsera Cabins (Utsera) – A-Frame cabins nestled near the forested area overlooking gorgeous mountain scenery.

Guesthouse Maresi

Racha hotels in Ambrolauri and nearby

Guesthouse Marisi (our choice) – if you want to stay in the city center, then the guesthouse Marisi is a fantastic choice. Ambrolauri is a tiny town, so everything is within a few minutes walk away from here, including a museum and shops.

The guesthouse rents out a separate cabin built in the garden and the ground floor of an old family house with a private kitchen and bathroom. The hostess and her family live upstairs but are very friendly and respectful of the guests. Unfortunately, the cabin was booked already, so we stayed on the ground floor and absolutely loved it. Contact them on Facebook.

Abies (our choice) – located in the village of Skhartali in Ambrolauri municipality, this secluded A-frame cabin is a great place to escape a city bustle in a peaceful environment surrounded by massive pine trees. The cottage is fully furnished with everything you might need, including a grill, skewers, and a toaster. It’s also great for a group of friends as it fits six people.

Due to its location, you’d need to bring everything with you as there is no shop nearby and the drive to Ambrolauri on an unpaved, off-road village lane is around 30 minutes. Contact them on Facebook.

18 Things to Do in Racha | Your Racha-Lechkhumi Travel Guide  5
Abies Cabin

Sadmeli Winery – a guesthouse and a winery located in the village of Sadmeli of Ambrolauri municipality, around 10km from Ambrolauri city. They also provide wine testings and can do a lunch or dinner on demand.

Wine Space – another guesthouse in Sadmeli village offering cute accommodations, beautiful landscape views, and a glamping tent.

Karse – one more guesthouse with a vineyard tucked away from the main highway. It’s only 10 minutes drive from Ambrolauri center and features a garden, BBQ facilities, and a restaurant.

Elsesi Racha Glamping – this is a spot for you if you are into glamping. Perched on a small hill, Elsesi has several glamping dome tents from which you can enjoy beautiful views every morning while sipping your cup of coffee.

18 Wonderful things to do in Racha-Lechkhumi

This section provides all the essential things to do in Racha and Lechkumi areas that we covered in a week. Some sights can be seen by public transport, but most are best explored by driving a car

Attend ROKVA Music Festival

ROKVA is an annual summer music festival held in Shovi, the highlands of Racha. The festival brings local and international artists of various music genres but mainly focuses on electronic and alternative music.

The festival’s ample space has three stages, food courts, a handmade craft section, and many bars. It also has a camping spot, but I’d recommend staying at nearby guesthouses for more comfort and support the local community.

Tip: once the organizers announce the festival dates, nearby accommodation options get booked immediately, so if you plan on attending it, I suggest being quick. We stayed in Glola village, 3km away from the festival space, during our festival dates.

Since most of these guesthouses are not on the internet, here are a few ones to call and book in Glola:

  • Family Hotel Rachuli Sakhli (our choice): +995591317777 Dato
  • Guesthouse Shovi: +995595850180
  • Guesthouse Glola Shovi: +995577305290

Visit Ambrolauri Fine Art Museum

You’d be surprised to see a fine collection of Georgian artists at Ambrolauri Fine Art Museum. Located in the city center, inside the culture house, the museum houses a great collection of well-known Georgian artists of the 20th century, including Elene Akhvlediani, Lado Gudiashvili, David Kakabadze, and Ucha Japaridze, to name a few.

Here you can admire the examples of abstract expression, Art Brut, lyrical abstraction, and social realism, to name a few.

The museum is well laid out and has English translations and explanations of the works.

On the museum’s ground floor, you’ll see some old posters of theater plays held in the culture house.

Opening hours: 10 am – 7 pm every day

Entrance fee: 2 GEL for adults

Admire the only two street arts in Ambrolauri

While some cities of Georgia, like Batumi, Ozurgeti, and Kutaisi, boast stunning street art pieces, Ambrolauri didn’t have any until recently.

18 Things to Do in Racha | Your Racha-Lechkhumi Travel Guide  10

My friend, Tamar Meskhi, painted the only two murals in the city in collaboration with Girlz Wave, a feminist multimedia platform from Tbilisi.

These murals raise awareness about women’s sexual and reproductive health.

Explore natural wonders around Skhartali village

Racha is home to numerous caves and springs begging to be explored. Since the region is not that popular among tourists, these places are untouched by massive tourist infrastructure and are in their original state.

You can undoubtedly peek inside these caves, but I do not recommend going deep without an experienced guide or speleologist.

All the caves and springs are marked on Google Maps. However, since we stayed near Skhartali village, we walked to these sights. Otherwise, you’d need an SUV or 4WD car to get to these places from Shaori Lake.

Sakishore cave: one of the longest explored karst caves in Georgia, covering 4500 meters. The cave is tucked behind moss-covered rocks and limestone cliffs. It’s a gorgeous place to see and take some fantastic pictures.

Cholaga spring: a few minutes walk from Sakishore cave, a freshwater river creates an emerald green small pond.

Drink beer at Posta Bar in Ambrolauri

Housed in an old Post Office, the Posta Bar is the only bar in Ambrolauri, making it one of the cool things to do in Racha. Come to drink beer or other drinks in the evening and socialize with the youth.

Sunbathe at Bungalow Changes

On the Krikhula River, locals have created a social space with a bungalow bar to relax, sunbathe, and have fun.

18 Things to Do in Racha | Your Racha-Lechkhumi Travel Guide  13

Staying the whole day relaxing and sunbathing at the Bungalow Changes is one of the favorite things to do in Racha for many local visitors. Located around 4km from Ambrolauri center, Bungalow Changes is an excellent place to come during the day, swim in the freezing mountain river Krikhula, nibble on homemade pastries like Khachapuri and Lobiani, swing in the hammocks, and simply enjoy your stay in Racha.

The Bungalow even provides sun chairs and lounges for a small fee. The chairs cost 3 GEL and the sun lounge – 5 GEL. Drinks and food also have very reasonable prices, that’s why you see it packed at any time of the day.

Feel in the fairytale by staying at Garemo

Garemo, a small wooden cabin, looks like a house in one of the fairytale stories, tucked somewhere near the forest and lush greenery. It is precisely that, but instead of a dense forest, the venue has a vineyard, garden, seasonal pool, and bigger cabin to stay in.

18 Things to Do in Racha | Your Racha-Lechkhumi Travel Guide  14

The cabin has all the necessary items, kitchenware, and comfortable furniture.

See the atypical iconostasis at Barakoni church

I rarely recommend visiting churches in my Georgia posts. However, Barakoni and Nikortsminda (see below) are the exceptions and should be on everyone’s list of things to do in Racha.

Nestled on the way from Ambrulaouri to Oni, this Church of the Mother God, often called Barakoni, has one of the most beautiful and unique interiors I have seen in Georgian churches.

18 Things to Do in Racha | Your Racha-Lechkhumi Travel Guide  15

Commissioned by a local lord in 1753, Barakoni is a domed cruciform church and a great example of medieval Georgian architecture.

Peek inside to see the unique iconostasis, the wall of paintings separating the altar and nave. The dark wood and arch-shaped frames feature beautiful icons and images of various saints.

Marvel at stunning Oni Synagogue

In the past, Oni had a significant Jewish population and was considered to be the third largest community in Georgia after Kutaisi and Tbilisi. Around 3,000 Jews lived in Oni, and it’s quite a number for a small town like this!

With a backdrop of the mountains, the Oni Synagogue is a fascinating sight, almost out of place. A silver-blue dome, stunning stonework, and carvings make it a lovely building to see.

18 Things to Do in Racha | Your Racha-Lechkhumi Travel Guide  16

The synagogue, constructed in 1895 by a Polish architect and workers from Thessaloniki, has a gorgeous Moorish style. Sadly, most Jews left for Israel over time, with almost no one left in Oni. Therefore, the synagogue is not entirely functional.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t go inside. I waited for someone to come by and ask how to get in, but no one showed up.

Learn more about Oni at the Local Lore Museum

This small museum housed in a building that hardly passes as a museum showcases interesting items worth your visit.

The museum has a massive collection of local ethnographic items packed on top of each other in dimly lit rooms and no space to display each item correctly. I felt very sad to see these historical archive collects dust and gets ruined. However, the staff told me there would be a new building for the museum, and they’d finished the black frame already.

Items from the Stone and Bronze Ages, a fragment of weapons, everyday things like kitchenware and clothes, architectural details, and relief fragments from various historical churches, manuscripts, photos, books, and paintings await you here.

Opening hours: Tue-Sun: 10 am – 5 pm. Closed on Mondays.

Entrance fee: 2 GEL for adults.

Explore so-called Stalin’s summer house in Shovi

I have always wanted to see this magnificent wooden house locals call Stalin’s Dacha. Dacha is a Russian word for country house or cottage used for holidays. However, there is no record of Stalin traveling to Racha.

18 Things to Do in Racha | Your Racha-Lechkhumi Travel Guide  19

According to my host in Glola, this was the first building of the spa resort Shovi, which was famous during Imperial Russia and the Soviet reign because of its mineral springs with curative purposes.

Later, the government built concrete buildings in the area that comprised the famous spa resort. Today, most of them are abandoned.

This run-down, grand, symmetrical house is an architectural marvel nestled in coniferous and pine forests with stunning views of the mountains from its balconies.

Be careful when going inside as some parts of the floor are missing; you might even stumble upon cow dung inside and shattered window glass inside and outside the house.

Looking at Google Maps, this building is marked Shovi – Old Holiday House “Stalin’s House.”

If you can read Georgian, there’s another one closeby marked Beria and Stalin Holiday House (ბერიას და სტალინის დასასვენებელი აგარაკი). This is another abandoned building, probably one more building of the Shovi spa complex. It’s an interesting place to explore but not as impressive as the so-called Stalin’s Dacha.

Tip: if you are driving from Oni to Shovi, there are two places I recommend getting the most delicious Lobiani – the black bean pie Racha is famous for. One is marked on Google Maps as საცხობი “მთის რაჭა” “Mtis Racha .”They bake Lobiani on a clay pot, and it is one of the best ones I’ve tried.

The second is right in front of Family Hotel Rachuli Sakhli, where a guy bakes Lobiani in a tone clay oven, giving it a unique and artisanal taste.

You’d need to order them in advance in both places and pick them up once you drive back to Oni.

Gaze at marvelous stone carvings and frescos at Nikortsminda Cathedral

Nikortsminda Cathedral is one of the most stunning cathedrals in the Caucasus region. Vibrant 17th-century dynamic and rich frescos cover the massive walls of the church. The cathedral’s interior is also unique to Georgia – it has a hexagonal shape not common in Georgian church architecture.

However, the stone carvings on its exterior showcasing biblical scenes and saints make this church even more remarkable, awaiting to be listed as a UNESCO sight.

Unwind at Shaori Lake

This artificial reservoir is one of the most famous sights of Racha. You can’t miss this stunning huge lake if you drive to Racha via Kutaisi-Tkibuli-Ambrolauri road. The lake is 7.1km long, 2.7km wide, and 14.5 meters deep. The scenery around the lake is absolutely stunning in autumn.

18 Things to Do in Racha | Your Racha-Lechkhumi Travel Guide  24

In the summer months, locals visiting Racha often swim in the lake. There are a few spots with bars and cafes to unwind, grab a drink, and enjoy the scenery.

Stop at the only remaining Soviet bus stop

If you’ve followed me along my journeys in Georgia or elsewhere, I love Soviet things, especially the mosaics. Therefore, I am always on the hunt for relics of that period.

18 Things to Do in Racha | Your Racha-Lechkhumi Travel Guide  25

I typically follow this custom-made Google Maps made by GeoAIR years ago, and I was surprised to see that Racha-Lechkhumi doesn’t have much of Soviet factories or bus stops. The only remaining bus stop I could find was at the village of Chrebalo. Unfortunately, the author and the year are unknown.

Find the Lailashi Secret Pool

One of the things to do in Racha is to find this stunning place – the Secret Pool of Lailashi in Leckhumi has been on my bucket list since I saw a picture of it on social media. It looks like an infinity pool due to its cold mountain water flow and location on the hill.

Located west of Ambrolauri, around a 2-hour drive on a steep unpaved road, is one of the scenic natural freshwater pools I have seen. The views here are absolutely stunning, overlooking Lajanura Reservoir, forested mountains, and the nearby village.

18 Things to Do in Racha | Your Racha-Lechkhumi Travel Guide  26

The Source of Orkonishi is written on the sign showing the direction of the pool once you drive to Lailashi village. The spot is also on Google Maps with accurate directions.

The road from the main Alpana-Tsageri highway to Lailashi is quite winding, but road works were going on during our visit, so hopefully, there will be a proper road sometime soon.

During colder months, locals turn off the water flow to the pool, so the best time to visit the Lailashi pool filled with water is during summer. It’s a popular spot for many local kids who come here to have fun and cool down. However, you can still take pictures as if no one is there.

Eat Georgian trout at Kulbaki

Kulbaki Green Lake is a private fish farm where you can take a stroll, look at various fish (mostly trout and sturgeon) cultivated here, and even sit down for lunch or dinner at its restaurant.

18 Things to Do in Racha | Your Racha-Lechkhumi Travel Guide  27

There is no entrance fee or anything, you can simply look around and leave, but since you drove all the way up there on an unpaved off-road, I highly recommend staying for lunch or dinner and trying their fried trout.

The fish farm also has several activities you can do here, such as sport fishing, boat tour on a lake, and horseback riding. You can also buy trout by kilograms and make it at home.

The venue is extensive and features various picnic spots and hammocks to relax and soak up the scenery.

things to do in racha

The restaurant has reasonable prices, although there is no menu and you have to ask the staff what they can make for you. They typically have fish, Lobiani, Khachapuri, cucumber and tomato salad, mchadi (cornbread), and bread baked in-house, to name a few.

When asking the bill, the only odd thing was that the trout and mchadi had the same price – 5 GEL each. Usually, mchadi is cheaper as it only needs corn flour and water.

Sip local wine

Racha-Lekhumi is known for its specific and endemic grape types and wine; therefore, one of the best things to do in Racha is to try local wines. Although it’s not as popular as Kakheti, it’s getting there with more small and family-run wineries bottling wine for broader use.

Most of the wineries are around Ambolauri, but a few are in Lechkhumi too. Like elsewhere in Georgia, they also use Qvevri clay vessels and its techniques to make wine.

Khvanchkara, a sweet and fruity red wine, is the most famous wine in Racha, with the birthplace and microzone of Kvanchkara village. A blend of two grapes, Alexandrouli and Mujuretuli, makes this one characterized by dark ruby color and distinguished by a harmonious, velvety, fruity taste and aroma.

things to do in racha

Usakhelauri and Tvishi are the other two endemic grapes in Racha. Wines made from them have the same name, whereas Usakhelauri is the most expensive wine in Georgia. The reason is the technique and the specifications to care for the Usakhelauri grape vineyard and the less volume in wine production.

There are big and small wineries dotted in the region, and the easiest way to spot them is by looking for brown signs with Wine Route written on them.

If you want a wine tasting session in one of the family-run wineries, here are the two I recommend:

Margvelidze Wine Cellar – family-run winery in the oldest Racha house full of interesting ethnography items and interior. They offer a wine tasting session that includes two types of wine with a plate of snacks (Lobiani, Racha ham, and salad) and costs 35 GEL per person. There’s an option for dinner too.

Sadmeli Winery – another family-run cellar making natural Qvevri wines and Pet Nat. Wine tasting of three different wines costs 45 GEL.

Tip: Book the wine tastings in advance in both wineries.

If you are after a more commercial venue, try Royal Khvanchkara in the center of Ambrolauri, which has an organized tour of the factory and tasting of various wines. They have different packages from 20 GEL, including two wines and a small platter of snacks. You can show up and get the tour; no reservations are needed.

And in case you just want to buy wine to sip at your hotel or a guesthouse, we bought Khvanchara on tap in Wine House Khvanchkara in Khvanchkara village (pinned in my map).

Dine at Chrebalo Winery Cellar

This newly opened winery is gastronomical heaven and one of the best places to eat in Racha and Ambrolauri area.

The venue is extremely cute and charming, with a mixture of modern and traditional interiors, while the extensive menu offers unique regional meals.

We tried several meals, including a Pkhali platter, mashed potatoes with Racha Ham, cucumber salad with Adjika-sour cream sauce, Lobio with Racha Ham, Mchadi with Ham, and their one liter of Chrebalo white dry wine.

The service and the food were exceptional, one of the best we’ve tried in Racha.

What to eat in Racha

Regarding what to eat in Racha, there are several staples you can’t miss while visiting this region.

Shqmeruli

The village of Shqmeri is home to one of the most famous meals in the Racha region – Shqmeruli – fried or boiled chicken in garlic and sour cream sauce. Honestly, I am not a big fan of it, but I know many of my friends love this.

things to do in racha

Lobiani

Lobiani is a black bean pie and another type of Khachapuri. However, they make it slightly different in Racha than elsewhere in Georgia.

things to do in racha

The key here is to boil black beans together with Racha Ham so that it gets infused with all the ham aromas and tastes. Sometimes, instead of cooking it with the ham, they do it in water and then add slices of ham to the black bean filling.

Racha Ham

Racha Ham, or Rachuli Lori in Georgian, is smoked pig meat served in different styles in every guesthouse or restaurant. I’ve seen thick slices with lots of fat and salt in one of the guesthouses, while the restaurant in Ambrolauri served it sliced very thinly (picture below).

things to do in racha

Where to eat in Racha

Sadly, Racha and Lechkhumi lack restaurant and cafe options, and it’s hard to find a place to eat. Your best bet is the guesthouses, wine cellars, and a few hotels. Here are a few I recommend:

Guest House Gallery (Oni) – even though I tried to book a table during one week of our Racha trip and couldn’t, I still recommend this place as it was highly priced by my friends who’ve been here before.

Sadmeli Winery (Ambrolauri) – wine cellar that also accommodates walk-in guests for lunch or dinner.

Tip: you’d need to call them or show up in advance to pre-order the lunch or dinner and set a time when you’ll be there.

Metekhara Cafe (Amboraluri) – the only cafe we found in Ambrolauri city center that is part of a hotel. They serve delicious regional meals, but the service is slightly slow.

Chrebalo Wine Cellar (village Chrebalo, Ambrolauri) – the best dining option we’ve found in Racha, full of interesting and unique regional meals.

Other places to visit in Racha

Even though this guide covers a lot of places to visit in Racha, there are a few ones that we didn’t manage to see, but I decided to include in case you can:

Ghebi – a scenic mountain village in the mountainous area of Racha, is often called the “Switzerland of Georgia.” You need a 4WD car to get there.

Sairme Pillars – when driving from Ambrolauri to Lechkhumi, you just can’t miss those limestone rock formations. The best way to see them is to drive a 4WD car and then walk around 1km to reach them. I’ve only seen the pictures, and the scenery is simply stunning.

Ghvirishi Waterfall – nestled at 625 meters above sea level, this waterfall falls from a high cliff into a deep ravine and forms a small lake. There’s a glass viewpoint panorama platform at the top of the waterfall to enjoy the scenic landscape.

Hiking in Racha, Georgia

If you are into hiking in Racha, there are several trails you can take. Unfortunately, I haven’t done any of them during my Racha trips, so I can’t give you many details. Although, I can recommend a few detailed resources that you’ll find helpful:

My friends of Going the Whole Hogg, Kim and Del, did Udziro Lake hike from Shovi to Glola and have described the trail in detail on their blog. They also have a stunning video documenting the trek.

Caucasus-Trekking is a highly detailed hiking guide for the whole of Georgia, with plenty of detailed treks documented for each region, and Racha is no exception. Jozef, the platform owner, has explored all these areas himself. See his recommendations for hiking in Racha
