What’s a traditional Georgian breakfast?

This is a question every first-time traveler to Georgia asks me and everyone else. Sadly, Georgian food lacks breakfast items even though it has many meals.

Generally speaking, only a few Georgians eat breakfast, and the first thing they do in the morning is drink a cup of coffee.

Best Breakfast in Tbilisi: 22 Spots for Early & Late Raisers 1

However, for those of us who do, a very typical Georgian breakfast consists of slices of bread and a spread of butter, sometimes accompanied by pureed jams we call pavidlo – either spread on top of the butter or directly on the bread.

Eggs are also very common for Georgian breakfast. We like our eggs Sunny Side Up – fried eggs with yoks up and not flipped. We also like a Shahuka-like egg dish or chizhi-bizhi with grated tomato, sliced bell peppers, and onions. Another egg-based Georgian breakfast, my absolute favorite, is the French toast we call kikliko

Another thing you’d like to know about breakfast in Tbilisi or elsewhere in the country is that Georgians are used to lazy mornings. Therefore, most breakfast places in Tbilisi open late and are more of a brunch than a breakfast.

Luckily, quite recently, breakfast culture has changed. Many restaurants open early for those who want to start their day early in trendy, stylish, and comfortable cafes.

Breakfast in Tbilisi for early raisers

Since there is no typical Georgian breakfast, many breakfast spots in Tbilisi offer more European-style meals such as eggs Benedict, omelets, oat porages, sandwiches, and toast. Whether you are a savory or sweet breakfast person, you can easily find a restaurant in Tbilisi that serves both.

So, where can you enjoy the best breakfast in Tbilisi? Here is a list of all the Tbilisi breakfast cafes and restaurants I personally tried and recommend.

Cafe Stamba

This modern, chic, and sophisticated cafe in the city center is part of a hotel and an excellent spot for breakfast. It also is one of the famous cafes in Tbilisi, so expect it to be packed in the morning. Therefore, come early or book a table.

Cafe Stamba has a separate breakfast menu offering cold and hot meals, muesli, and toasts. Their menu is not extensive but has plenty of options for any breakfast-type person.

And for those who love to eat various Viennoiseries, Cafe Stamba also offers homemade baked goodies with jam of your choice.

We had scrambled eggs with salmon and goat cheese toast on our visit. Scrambled eggs were well-done fillings and came with three good-sized slices of smoked salmon and a slice of bread. My goat cheese toast was super delicious, with very well-balanced flavors of apricot jam, arugula (rucola), and topped strawberries.

Kikliko

Kikliko, as I mentioned above, is a Georgian name for French toast and one of my favorite breakfast foods. The word’ kikliko’ also means a crowing of a roaster in the Georgian language.

Best Breakfast in Tbilisi: 22 Spots for Early & Late Raisers 4

If you are looking for a somewhat traditional Georgian breakfast in Tbilisi, Kikliko is the place.

Located in the Vake area, this small cafe with a tiny garden is slightly tucked away from the main Mtskheta street. As the name suggests, Kikliko mainly serves egg-related meals but also has muesli, oatmeal, pancakes, salads, and soups.

With its unusual take on French toasts, this Tbilisi breakfast spot quickly became popular among locals and foreigners.

Their menu includes classic French toast with different toppings, including ham, cheese, and even sweet ones.

Triple cheese Kikliko includes two French toasts with a melted mixture of three kinds of cheese (parmesan, mozzarella, and cream cheese), a good portion of sour cream, and sun-dried and fresh tomato slices. It might seem small, but the portion is very filling.

The Ham and sulguni (mozzarella-like Georgian salty cheese) Kikliko is very similar to the triple cheese and has ham slices on top of melted sulguni

Hello Breakfast

Hello Breakfast should be on your list if you want healthy options and an all-day breakfast in Tbilisi. Its main aim is to educate people on “we are what we eat” by offering various fresh, tasty, and healthy meals in its minimalist yet modern interior.

The extensive menu has various bowls, toasts, pancakes, soups, salads, and desserts. Their drink menu also offers a great choice of smoothies with indicated calories per serving. Some of the food is also sugar, dairy, and gluten-free.

I had an Acai berry superfood smoothie with homemade granola, seeds, Acai berries, and strawberries. Oto ordered avocado toast with poached egg and smoked salmon.

The meals are very Instagramy with picture-perfect plating. The toast portion was average and filling, while my Acai berry bowl was tiny with a splash of homemade granola. I honestly think it was overpriced for what I got. But the pictures turned out perfect!

Oto’s toast was better, with a good slice of bread, salmon, and poached egg. The only thing we didn’t like was the avocado spread. I couldn’t pinpoint what was wrong with it, but it tasted strange. However, I am giving it the benefit of the doubt as sometimes getting a good, tasty, and ripe avocado in Tbilisi is tough. So this doesn’t mean that their meals with avocados will always taste differently.

Sol

This newly opened breakfast in Tbilisi spot offers all-day breakfast and cocktails in its cute, charming, and Instagrammable place. A pastel-colored interior with neon signs and a small garden-like terrace is an excellent place for sweet and savory breakfast meals.

The word ‘sol’ means ‘sun’ and was also the name of a Roman God personifying the sun. Therefore, the cafe’s concept is around the sun, light, and energy.

I love their attention to detail, where chairs, napkin holders, bowls, plates, and even staff t-shirts are all in their brand colors! The interior is modern, minimalist, and stylish, with a splash of color. I also liked the open kitchen where you can see your meals prepared.

The venue offers a vast selection of healthy and light meals prepared with fresh ingredients. If you love a typical breakfast plate, Your Breakfast item on the menu comes with a boiled egg, toasted bread, bacon, sausage, salad mix, and cheese sauce.

Apart from this, you can find various egg-based meals such as omelet variations, egg benedict, smoothie bowls, porridges, soups, appetizers, cold and hot sandwiches, toasts, bagels, salads, pancakes, desserts, you name it! The choice is so vast that it gets overwhelming what to order.

Their most popular and signature meal is the egg benedict with salmon that comes on brioche bread with melted cheese sauces poured over. You also have a choice of sauce – guacamole or cream cheese.

The benedict is big and filling, the flavors are balanced, and the sauces are enough. It also comes with a side salad mix. I would have preferred to have a typical bread instead of a brioche, but that’s my preference. Otherwise, it all tasted excellent!

In addition, I tried their pancake with chocolate, nuts, and seeds, topped with seasonal fruits (mainly a mixture of fresh strawberries and different frozen berries and cherries). These American-style pancakes with good chocolate spread and toppings were also delicious and well prepared.

You can always pair your breakfast meal with fresh juice, homemade lemonade, or light cocktails.

Fabrika Tbilisi

Everyone knows Fabrika; it’s one of the trendiest hangout places for many locals and foreigners. This old Soviet sewing factory turned into a hostel, and a multifunctional space is ideal if you are looking for an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet in Tbilisi.

Fabrika is different from your typical hostel. Therefore, breakfast here is top-notch and very uncommon for such a venue. Being part of a big hotel chain, Adjara Group (the one that owns Rooms Tbilisi, Rooms Kokhta, Rooms Kazbegi, Hotel Stamba, Lolita, etc.) significantly brings high standards and a 4-star hotel breakfast spread.

Omelets made in front of you, homemade yogurts, charcuterie, various types of cheese, jams, pastries, tasty bread, veggies to make your own salad, juices, and more are on display, all costing 27 GEL per person.

Without a doubt, Fabrika Tbilisi breakfast is the best in town.

Erti Kava Coffee Room

Located just off Rustaveli Avenue, this charming café is a true visual gem with embroidery decoration at the entrance, while striking red stencils and cute embellishments adorn the walls from the inside. They have three branches in Tbilisi, as well as in Batumi and Mestia

Besides serving one of the best coffee in Tbilisi, they also offer appealing breakfast choices.

Their all-day breakfast menu is impressive, boasting sweet and savory creations. From classic English breakfast and oatmeal to toast and fluffy pancakes, Erti Kava Coffee Room caters to diverse tastes.

And while there, remember to explore the quaint souvenir shop in the back.

Blamanje

You can find Blamanje on the ground floor of Bazari Orbeliani, an extensive food court in the center of Tbilisi near Kolmeurneoba Square. Blamanje is a sunny, cozy cafe serving breakfast and pastries all day.

The breakfast menu is extensive, and everyone can find something they want to start a day with. They’ve got your breakfast classics like omelet, porridge, guacamole toast, granola, sunny-side-up eggs, and Benedict.

They also have some creative morning dishes like a pulled pork sandwich, carrot cream soup with a kick of ginger and honey, and waffles with salmon, cream cheese, and fresh cucumber.

On my visit to Blamanje, I opted for a vegetable salad with avocado and honey mustard sauce. The salad came with cherry tomatoes, fresh cucumber, lettuce leaves, and thin slices of half an avocado. The sauce was sweet and well-balanced.

I also tried their signature Blamanje, the dessert the venue is named after, but instead of choosing a classic one, I tried the one made from coconut milk with a berry jello on top.

Breakfast Is…

This newly opened breakfast spot in Tbilisi since spring 2023 is right behind the Freedom Square metro station that opens up at 8 am.

The space has laid-back dining lounge vibes, an open kitchen, and seven tables within its brick walls and minimalist yet cozy homey design. The menu, written on a blackboard, is packed with your breakfast classics, like scrambled eggs, shakshuka, syrniki (cottage cheese pancakes), oatmeal, granola, and French toast, to name a few. You’ll even find a Danish Breakfast spread, a rare find in Tbilisi.

It was surprising for me to see this extensive menu within this small space and tiny open kitchen. But the meals they make and the time they devote to preparation is definitely on point. This is not a place to rush in and out; instead, you take your time to savor every bite of their tasty dishes.

I had a Proscuitto and Stracciatella sandwich with a light spread of pesto, sunny-side-up eggs, cherry tomatoes, salad leaves, and sauce. It was big and filling. After seeing it at the neighboring table, I wanted to try their sweet French toast, but sadly, I had no space for it. Next time!

They get busy in the mornings and late afternoons. My visit was at noon on a Saturday, and while I scored a small table for myself, it got full after 10 minutes of my arrival.

I love small details and absolutely admired the writing ‘Breakfast Is… the most important meal of the day’ on the backs of staff’s branded t-shirts.

Chaduna

A few minutes from Freedom Square, Chaduna is another popular spot for locals and foreigners looking for leisure and all-day comfort food.

It’s my favorite place if I am in the neighborhood and looking for the best breakfast in Tbilisi Old Town. Although their menu is small, they have good choices with whole meals, appetizers, salads, and desserts.

Best Breakfast in Tbilisi: 22 Spots for Early & Late Raisers 21

I have been there multiple times and have tried various meals – all of them are very good, with reasonable portions and a tasty combination of ingredients.

I think their Chizhi Bizhi, a Shakshuka-like meal, is one of the staples, followed by omelet and bruschetta. On my last visit, I tried their bacon, apple, and cream cheese bruschetta, a lovely combination of flavors. I only disliked the bacon because it was very oily, and I would prefer it to dry on a paper towel before assembling the bruschetta.

Bagelin

Bagelin is not a usual breakfast spot in Tbilisi, but it offers New York-style bagels freshly baked every day in-house. It’s another super popular place, so these bagels sell out almost instantly if you are not quick.

They are tucked away in a residential courtyard on 5 L. Sharahidze Street, come to this cafe/shop for their tasty plain bagels with various topics or seasonings on the go. Alternatively, you can sit down and enjoy their bagel sandwiches in their modern, minimalistic venue.

Best Breakfast in Tbilisi: 22 Spots for Early & Late Raisers 22

The menu has 11 bagel sandwiches, homemade dairy and non-dairy spreads, and cakes (including classic New York Cheesecake). They also sell in-house-made charcuterie from Saidanaa, seasonings, jams, nut butter, and sauces, to name a few. And if you feel like baking at home, they also sell frozen bagels and cookie dough.

I am a fan of their plain bagels; they are all delicious with balanced seasoning. Their bagel sandwiches are also great; I loved their New York sandwich with smoky salmon, cream cheese, and capers.

Coffee Lab

If you are after for an excellent place for coffee in Tbilisi that also serves delicious breakfast, consider going to Coffee Lab. It was one of the first spots that started roasting its own beans and offering exquisite Aeropress, French press, and siphon brews in town.

While you can spot their beans scattered across cafes and restaurants throughout the city, it’s worth going directly to any of their five branches.

Best Breakfast in Tbilisi: 22 Spots for Early & Late Raisers 23

The menu might be short, but they offer add-ons to make your meal even more filling and customized to your taste.

I had Avocado Toast on Borodino Bread, one of the best avocado toasts I’ve tried in Tbilisi. It came with guacamole and poached eggs seasoned with paprika and pumpkin seeds.

They also serve oat porridge with seasonal fruits, Benedict with smoked salmon on croissant, Moroccan Shakshuka, and pancakes for breakfast.

If you are after a more filling meal, the Coffee Lab menu also has sandwiches, salads, and desserts.

Santino Modccoffeebar

Located on Atoneli Street, Santino Modcoffeebar boasts the most enormous coffee menu in Georgia, along with an extensive choice of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. The menu looks like a magazine, and deciding what to have for breakfast might be challenging.

Best Breakfast in Tbilisi: 22 Spots for Early & Late Raisers 24

For those looking for an all-day breakfast in Tbilisi, Santino is the place to go. They serve various egg-based meals, including Shakshuka, Eggs Benedict, and omelet. Moreover, you can add various toppings to your eggs. And if you love avocados, they have a dedicated page on the menu of different meals prepared with avocados.

I have been here twice and have tried their curd cakes and tramezzino. Curd cakes were soft and fluffy with the right amount of sweetness. Tramezzini is a triangular Italian sandwich made from slices of soft white bread without crusts. The salmon and avocado tramezzino was packed with ingredients and had a balanced taste. The one with bacon was also good.

Best Breakfast in Tbilisi: 22 Spots for Early & Late Raisers 25

However, the only downside of these tramezzinos is that it’s not quite filling, even though the portion is relatively reasonable. You’ll still have room for a dessert or a shared meal if you are there with friends. Because of that, I also ordered cherry Shtrudel, which was very delicious, with warmed cherry filling inside the soft dough.

Siamo

Located in front of the City Mall Saburtalo, Siamo offers breakfast and lunch meals in its small but spacious space with a tiny garden, indoor seating, and a terrace.

Best Breakfast in Tbilisi: 22 Spots for Early & Late Raisers 26

The menu is diverse and offers classic breakfast meals, including omelets and scrambles, English breakfast, porage, salads, sandwiches, and wraps, to name a few.

I’ve tried their Chizi-bizhi, a Georgian version of Shakshuka. It was different from other eateries I’ve tried. It had more tomato sauce and was served with a spoon, rather than a fork and knife. Nevertheless, it was pretty tasty, accompanied by four slices of toasted bread and an ample amount of cheese sprinkled on top.

Tbilisi breakfast places for late raisers

Tbilisi’s food scene is ideal for late raisers and those who want to start their mornings leisurely. If you are one of them, here are some of the best breakfast places in Tbilisi that open slightly late.

Slink Cafe

Located within a charmingly renovated greenhouse at Ilia’s Garden (formerly known as Roses Park) a few minutes walk from Marjanishvili metro, Slink Cafe is another breakfast sport in Tbilisi, offering an all-day breakfast and brunch menu influenced by Asian flavors and cooking methods.

The open floor, massive communal wooden tables, a few plants, and natural light pouring inside from all sides of the former greenhouse, including the roof, create an inviting and peaceful environment to enjoy your meal of the day.

I also liked the pastel color pallet combination of greens, mint, and pink in the interior. Another feature I admire is its open kitchen – to see chefs whisking up your meal.

This women-owned cafe has a breakfast lineup of gourmet toasts, sandwiches, egg-based meals, and much more.

Their Slink Breakfast comes with two sunny-side-up eggs, two small slices of bruschetta with camembert cheese and raspberry jam, baked beans, and a salad. The overall portion is extensive and quite filling. The bruschetta is an excellent addition to the slightly classic breakfast plate.

My friend Melanie ordered a Muhammara Brioche Sandwich with scumbled eggs, hummus, pink tomato, and topped with gauda. The presentation of her breakfast plate was more beautiful. And as she told me during our brunch date, the flavors were also on top.

We absolutely loved the sun rays coming through the greenhouse wall on a warm autumn day, but if you prefer more shade, there are a few outdoor seating tables, too.

  • Opening hours: Tue-Sun 10 am – 10 pm. Closed on Mondays
  • Neighborhood: Chughureti, near Marjanishvili metro

Lolita

The open kitchen, terrace, and garden-like setting make Lolita another excellent place for breakfast lovers in Tbilisi. Even though it’s very central, it doesn’t feel like you are just a few steps away from one of the busiest streets of the Vera neighborhood.

It’s also an ideal spot for late raisers as they offer brunch rather than breakfast. The late breakfast menu is not extensive, and you can find something that suits your mood that morning.

Best Breakfast in Tbilisi: 22 Spots for Early & Late Raisers 29

Several egg-based meals include eggs benedict, omelet, and scrambled eggs. Kilkiko sandwich is also an option with ham, eggs, dijon, gouda, and a side salad.

If you want something sweet in the morning, try their pancakes, ricotta hot cake, or sweet French toast. And for light meal options, they also have yogurt with granola, chia pudding, and overnight oats.

Botania

With elegant design and handpainted walls by Musya Keburia, the author of various impressive street art in Tbilisi,  Botania is another spot for late breakfast in Tbilisi, offering meals based on Georgian and European cuisine.

Their dedicated breakfast/brunch menu has a wide variety of meals. Besides the contemporary meal approach, Botania has sugar-free options such as rice pudding and lactose-free chia pudding.

On my visit with a few female friends, I ordered a toast with baked egg, yogurt cream, and caramelized sugar crumbs topped with banana and strawberry. It was delicious; however, I won’t lie, I was expecting something different, and I could not taste eggs in there. Although, the latter could be a good thing for those who don’t like the egg taste in a slightly sweet meal.

My friends were also impressed with their choices: French bread with cream cheese, caramelized figs, blue cheese, roasted nuts, and crusted bread with black currant, cream cheese mousse, and strawberries.

Strada

Strada is a chain of restaurants where culinary creativity blends with international flair. This beloved spot offers American and Asian cuisine with all-day-breakfast meals in its versatile setting suitable for various occasions. Whether planning a business launch, catching up with friends, or enjoying an evening dinner, Strada is an excellent choice.

Best Breakfast in Tbilisi: 22 Spots for Early & Late Raisers 32

While the breakfast menu may not be extensive, it makes up for its quality and taste. The menu has scrambled eggs on pancakes or waffles, chia pudding, and eggs benedict with salmon or avocado.

I’ve tried scrambled eggs on waffles with feta, tomato, and bacon. The waffles were soft and fluffy, while the eggs were well prepared and seasoned.

If none of their all-day-breakfast items is what you are looking for, the menu also has an extensive choice of appetizers, salads, entrees, soups, burgers and sandwiches, pasta, pizza, and Asian meals, along with cakes and desserts.

Breakfast in Tbilisi on the go

Apart from the sit-down cafes and restaurants in Tbilisi, you can also grab a quick bite and explore the city. Bakeries and pastry shops are ideal for such breakfast in Tbilisi, and here are some of my favorites.

ULI

Uli is a croissanterie and a popular choice for those looking for a quick breakfast on the go. This French-inspired bakery makes croissants and croffles – a hybrid between croissants and waffles.

Croffles are a newer creation made by pressing croissant dough in a waffle iron, resulting in a crispy, buttery texture that combines a croissant’s flakiness with a waffle’s crispiness. It originated in South Korea in the early 2010s and quickly gained popularity worldwide, making it one of the trendy breakfast items in many cafes and bakeries.

Croffles are served plain, dusted with powdered sugar, or topped with a variety of sweet or savory toppings, similar to waffles. Some popular toppings include fresh berries, whipped cream, Nutella, bacon, and cheese, to name a few.

Located at 5 Taras Shevchenko Street, next to The Cone Culture, this tiny walk-up window cafe has teddy bears sitting at its few outdoor tables, while its walls feature cute croissants, waffles, and croffles.

At Uli, you can try both savory and sweet croffles and croissants. On our visit, we tried pistachio and raspberry, and Oreo croffles. The one with pistachio came with cream, while Oreo had whipped cream; therefore, we loved the pistachio and raspberry combo more than Oreo.

They offer a unique and delicious twist on two classic breakfast foods, making them a must-try for any breakfast lover.

Sugar-Free | უშაქრო

Saburtalo area, near Delisi metro, hides a fascinating cake and pastry shop that sells sugar-free desserts. The bakery opened in 2021 and aims to offer healthy, high-quality, sugar-free sweets that don’t contain many calories.

Best Breakfast in Tbilisi: 22 Spots for Early & Late Raisers 35

Their diverse assortment includes muffins, banana bread, Panna Cottas, cheesecakes, eclairs, cinnamon rolls, etc.

When trying their creamy cakes, it doesn’t feel that they are sugar-free; they are as delicious as regular sugary cakes.

  • Opening hours: 9 am – 9 pm
  • Neighborhood: Saburtalo

Entree

While you can certainly sit down at Entree and enjoy your breakfast, this bakery chain is more of a quick-bite spot for me. They offer many sweet and savory pastries, sandwiches, salads, cakes, and desserts.

You can easily find at least one Entree in Tbilisi neighborhoods, as there are 15 spots scattered across the city. And if you are looking for typical egg-based breakfast meals, they serve those from 8 am.

Depending on what you will get, it can also be the cheap breakfast in Tbilisi for you.

  • Opening hours: 8 am – 11 pm
  • Neighborhood: Varies

Paul

The French bakery chain opened in Tbilisi a couple of years ago and has soon become popular with several branches all over the city. One of their centrally located spots is off Freedom Square on Tabidze Street.

With its French vibes and meals inspired by French cuisine, Paul is a sit-down cafe where you can enjoy a quick breakfast or take something on the go.

Their breakfast menu is extensive, with plenty of egg-based meals, croissant sandwiches, and yogurt cups, to name a few. They also have a bread basket with different small, in-house-made pieces of bread, butter, and jams.

  • Serving time: 9 am – 12 pm
  • Neighborhood: Varies

Buka’s Bakery

For those who love starting a day with something sweet, this is genuinely the best bakery in Tbilisi, serving delicious pastries all day.

Best Breakfast in Tbilisi: 22 Spots for Early & Late Raisers 36

They sell pastries made right on the spot, whole cakes, and slices too. At 1 pm, sharp, delicious, fluffy cinnamon rolls come out of the oven and sell out quickly.

However, their Paris-Brest with strawberry, choux, and eclairs are absolutely divine.
